Chicago is celebrating its 189th birthday today, and for those of us who love soul music, the city holds a very special place in the culture. Officially incorporated on March 4, 1837, Chicago’s story actually begins even earlier with Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a Black freeman from Haiti who established the first permanent settlement in the 1780s. From the very beginning, Black excellence has been part of Chicago’s foundation, and over time that legacy would help shape some of the most important music the world has ever heard.

When Black families moved north during the Great Migration, they brought gospel, blues, and church music with them. In Chicago those sounds evolved into something powerful. The city became home to artists who helped define soul music for generations. Sam Cooke carried the spirit of gospel into mainstream soul. Curtis Mayfield turned music into message and gave voice to a generation. Donny Hathaway brought unmatched emotion and musicianship that still resonates today.

Chicago also gave us the smooth harmonies of The Chi Lites, the timeless vocal group sound of The Dells, and the unforgettable baritone of Lou Rawls. Gene Chandler delivered classics like “Duke of Earl,” while The Staple Singers blended gospel roots with social awareness that spoke directly to the times. The city also produced the incredible Minnie Riperton, whose voice remains one of the most unique in music history, and the legendary Chaka Khan, one of the most powerful voices to ever come out of Chicago.

And the list keeps going. The Five Stairsteps, The Emotions, Buddy Guy, and so many others helped build Chicago’s musical legacy. There’s simply too much talent to fit into one post. What we do know is this. Chicago didn’t just contribute to soul music. Chicago helped shape the culture.

Happy 189th birthday to one of the greatest music cities in the world.
